September - Simple

It's quite simple to make changes to your health and wellbeing.

Don't believe me? I don't blame you. The information overload that we have in our modern world make things way more confusing than they should be!

This happens for a few reasons:
1. People are trying to sell you something.
-Ex: Can't let people think that just eating fruits and veggies is enough if you are trying to sell the latest "Greens Powder."
2. Information that's meant for a specific audience gets in front of everybody.
-Ex: Managing blood sugar levels (an incredibly important thing for Diabetics) gets pushed into the mainstream as a key factor of health for the general population.
3. The degree of importance gets blown out of proportion.
-Ex: Timing and spacing out your protein can have some minor benefits, but the overwhelming majority of benefits of protein intake come from simply getting enough!

Again, it's quite simply to make changes to your health and wellbeing...

But simple doesn't mean easy. In fact, I'd argue that a litmus test for the validity of a change is that it should be simple in its idea but challenging to put into practice regularly.

Losing weight is Simple. Eat less calories that you burn.
-But that doesn't mean it's easy! It'll likely leave you hungrier than you'd like at certain times and it may be challenging to track what you eat to correctly count the calories that you are consuming.

Eating a healthy Diet is Simple. Eat more fruits and veggies and more lean protein.
-But it's certainly not easy. It'll mean changing your dietary habits. It might mean going shopping more often than you're used to. It'll mean learning different recipes. The food you eat might not be as delicious as when you're eating less healthily (let's be honest, Oreos taste better than broccoli!).

Getting in shape is simple! Lift heavy a couple days of the week, get out of breath working out a couple days of the week and stretch things that feel tight.
-But again, this isn't easy. Working out will be uncomfortable. You'll have to learn new ways of moving your body. You'll discover weaknesses or things that aren't fun to do, but are hugely beneficial for keeping you strong and injury free!

Sleeping better is simple. Get yourself tired enough through movement to feel sleepy, keep your room quiet and dark, minimize pre-bed screen time.
-Yet again, all of this is pretty simple, but not easy to do. Life gets in the way. Late nights happen. Etc.

So what's my point with all of this?

My point is one that I hit on often. I'm probably sounding like a broken record by now, but with how much we get inundated with information to the contrary, I think it's worth it to be that broken record!

Most people don't need something fancy, new and complicated to see better results. What most people need is to be more consistent with and/or put more intensity into the simple health practices that actually matter.

(Consistency + Intensity) x Basic Practices = Health and Fitness!

It's as simple as that.

Hope this helps,
-Sean
